WebMD: “Massage Therapy Styles and Health Benefits”

24 Jul

Whether you’re a new massage therapist, a new massage client, or even just someone vaguely interested in massage, WebMD’s page “Massage Therapy Styles and Health Benefits” offers a concise, interesting overview of therapeutic massage as a healing practice with many variations. This webpage lists the main forms of therapeutic massage as follows: Swedish massage, neuromuscular therapy massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, chair massage, shiatsu massage, Thai massage, hot stone massage, reflexology, and pregnancy massage.

As a massage therapy student, I am studying and practicing Swedish massage, which is primarily for relaxation but offers many additional health benefits. However, I am also learning about and sometimes practicing chair massage, which is a fast-paced and energizing massage commonly seen at community events, sports events, and even work places. In the future, I plan on pursuing certifications in pregnancy massage and hot stone massage.

If you are a massage therapist, which forms of therapeutic massage do you practice? If you are a massage client or someone interested in massage, which forms of therapeutic massage have you tried or wanted to try?
